7W3 Class Celebrates its 50th Reunion
Reconnecting with old classmates, getting updated on what each other has been doing the last 50 years, and hearing old stories (sometimes for the second and third time – or more), are just some of the things that took place when the Class of 7W3 celebrated their 50th reunion during Alumni Weekend, June 2-3.
The celebration began during the 130th Commencement on June 2, when a large number of the class marched in the processional wearing gold robes so all would know they were celebrating their 50th. Class member Tim Kain had the honor of opening the ceremony with the invocation.
That evening, the classmates met at the Inn at Swarthmore for their 50th reunion. The evening began with mingling and getting reacquainted. Many reconnected with old friends they hadn’t seen in many years – in some cases 50 years. Many admitted having difficulty putting a name with a face.
The formal portion of the evening began with a class toast and meal blessing with Dennis Schwandt and a class welcome by Kain.
Then, the Fund-raising Committee of Kain, Schwandt, and Frank Striffling, presented President Michael Rounds with a large facsimile of their class’ reunion gift to Williamson – $73,000 (their fund-raising goal).
After thanking the class for their generosity, Rounds congratulated the class on achieving 50 years out of Williamson and representing the school so well as Williamson Men. After giving a state of the school update, he gave “Fun Facts,” humorous or interesting stories about each class member who was present.
After dinner, Arlene Snyder, vice president for institutional advancement, gave some welcoming remarks, and she and Kelsey Turk, associate vice president for institutional advancement, gave each class member a souvenir 50th medallion to wear around their neck the rest of the weekend.
Then, Schwandt gave a tribute and led a moment of silence to remember classmates who are no longer with us. In an “open mic” portion of the evening, classmates had the opportunity to stand up and share some memories of their school days and talk of the role Williamson has played in their lives.
The day came to a close with Kain giving closing remarks and all joining in the singing of the alma mater.
The next day, many classmates attended Alumni Day on campus in the new Joseph L. and Marion M. Wesley Student Center, where they enjoyed a continental breakfast and meet and greet with Rounds, visited their old shops, in Rowan Hall attended a memorial chapel and luncheon in the dining room, and bought Williamson souvenirs in the College Store.
The evening ended with an alumni reception in the Wesley Student Center, with the entire group of 7W3 classmates presenting Rounds with the class’ 50th reunion gift in front of a large audience.
As the weekend came to a close, all agreed they enjoyed each other’s company so much they need to get together sooner rather than later.
