Scott Carothers has been involved in the ceramic tile industry for over 45 years. He is the Academic Director of the Ceramic Tile Education Foundation (CTEF) in Pendleton, S.C. In 2007, he was hired as the Executive Director of CTEF, tasked with creating the Certified Tile Installer (CTI) testing program. In 2012, he was part of the team that created the Advanced Certifications for Tile Installers (ACT) testing program.
Earlier, he was the owner of a successful retail store and installation firm in Altoona, Pa., before going to CTEF.
Carothers said, “Becoming a Williamson trustee is a humbling honor and a distinct privilege for me. Since my dad, Charles Carothers, was a member of the Class of 4W0 and studied carpentry at Williamson, becoming a trustee allows me to give back to Williamson for the talents and virtues instilled in him through the program over 85 years ago. My goal is to make a difference in the programs and operation of the school and to assist in its carefully structured growth.”
For over 17 years he has been providing tile training and education to those working in the tile industry. He says his passions are teaching others using the gifts that have been provided to him, giving back to the community, and trying to make a difference.
For the past five years he has been providing a one-week, hands-on training program for Williamson’s masonry seniors on the proper installation of ceramic tile. He also serves on the Construction Technology-Masonry Program Advisory Committee. Carothers said, “My free-time passion is teaching others using the gifts that have been provided to me, giving back to the community, and trying to make a difference.”
He served as President and later Chairman of the Board of the National Tile Contractors Association (NTCA), Chairman of the NTCA Technical Committee, was named the NTCA Tile Person of the Year in 2005, and received the NTCA Ring of Honor in 2013.
He is a voting member of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the Tile Council of North America (TNCA), and NTCA Technical Committees.
He has shared his installation knowledge and experience by authoring over 185 articles in tile industry magazines, including Floor Covering Installer, Floor Trends and Installation, Tile, and TileLetter, along with covering numerous topics on the CTEF blog. He also has been a speaker at the annual International Surfaces Event (TISE) and Coverings Tile and Stone Exhibition shows. He recently retired from being a trainer/presenter for the NTCA Workshop and Regional Training Programs and the NTCA Technical Hotline.
He earned an associate’s degree at Williamsport Area Community College (now Penn Tech).
He and his wife Debbie live in Anderson, S.C., and are active members of the First Presbyterian Church, where he is an Elder on the Session and is Chairman of the Property Committee. He also participates in church mission trips and works with Habitat for Humanity.
Their children are Laura Graham (husband Joe and granddaughter Leslie) of Media and Elisa Carothers of Charleston, S.C.
