The Impact of Giving

Rasul first learned about Williamson College of the Trades when an Admissions representative visited his classroom at Horace Furness High School to give a presentation about the different career tracks available at Williamson. At the time, Rasul was unsure of what he wanted to do after graduation. The idea of learning a trade, earning an associate’s degree in three years, and avoiding the financial burden associated with most other college options greatly appealed to him. He vividly remembers how happy he felt when he received his acceptance, calling his mom immediately and sharing his excitement with all of his teachers that day.

WHY THE TRADES?
Rasul describes himself as a bit of a perfectionist and someone who enjoys working with his hands. He has always been interested in architecture and engineering but had not chosen a clear path before enrolling at Williamson. Participating in the Masonry program has exposed him to various practical applications related to his fields of interest, and he now feels better prepared to pursue a career that aligns with his skill set.

TRANSFORMATIVE IMPACT
Williamson has changed Rasul’s life in countless ways, but he credits the connections he has made with his teachers, peers, and other businessmen as having the greatest impact. “The people around me have given me a whole new perspective on the importance of work ethic. I work hard every day to adopt the principles they’ve taught me,” Rasul explains.

LEARNING TO LEAD
Reflecting on his educational journey, Rasul shares that he wasn’t aware of his innate leadership ability until he learned to embrace it at Williamson. As an introvert, he was surprised when one of his high school teachers noted how many of his fellow students looked up to him. Rasul says, “That’s the first time I realized that being a leader can be as simple as leading by example. Now, I call myself more of a backseat leader. I’ve never been the first to speak out or give directions, but Williamson has taught me how to delegate, how to lead, and how to carry myself in a way that encourages others to ask me for help.”

ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING
Rasul advises incoming Williamson students that the best way to leverage the opportunities Williamson offers is to arrive with a positive attitude. He emphasizes that, while Williamson provides a great environment and a solid foundation, students must be willing to put in the effort. He explains, “Even wearing a tie for some kids can be a big adjustment, so it’s important to come prepared with the right mindset. There will always be challenges in life, but it’s important to keep looking forward. Once we graduate from Williamson, we’ll be able to look back and really appreciate the positive experiences and how they have built us up for the future.”

WORDS OF WISDOM
One of the most valuable lessons Rasul has learned at Williamson is the importance of being his own best friend. “You can’t expect people to look out for you if you’re not looking out for yourself,” he says.
