The Impact of Giving

Connor Gordon grew up in Delaware, primarily in New Castle, although his family moved throughout the state during his childhood. As the youngest of six, he was mainly raised with his closest-in-age sister, which later made the camaraderie at Williamson especially meaningful to him. He attended Hodgson Vocational Technical High School and initially pursued dental assisting, a childhood interest. Although he completed the program and earned his certification, Connor realized his true passion was elsewhere. Committed to his goals, he finished the program but set his sights on construction management upon graduation.

WHY THE TRADES?
Connor always knew he wanted a hands-on career, even when he was unsure about attending college. While researching construction management opportunities, he discovered Williamson College of the Trades. The combination of a full scholarship, on-campus living, and career-focused training immediately stood out. After visiting campus with his mother, Connor was drawn not only to the academic programs but to the strong sense of community. “It seemed like a place where I could build bonds and experience that brotherhood I didn’t grow up with,” he explains.

TRANSFORMATIVE IMPACT
Connor describes his time at Williamson as life-changing, and his family has commented about the differences they see in him when he comes home. In high school, he was more reserved and uninvolved. Since enrolling at Williamson, he has grown into a motivated, disciplined, and engaged individual. One of the most visible transformations has been his physical health—since enrolling, Connor has lost 60 pounds and adopted a consistent fitness routine. “It’s the structure,” he says. “Being in a routine every day has helped me physically and mentally.” Connor has also become very involved on campus. He joined the tennis team during his first year and later stepped outside his comfort zone to participate in wrestling. These experiences have helped him build confidence, friendships, and a stronger sense of belonging.

LESSON LEARNED
One lesson Connor has learned at Williamson is the importance of taking ownership of his actions. He admits that he often acted or spoke without thinking while in high school. Now, he approaches decisions more thoughtfully. “I’ve learned that actions have consequences,” he says. “And I usually think twice before I act.” He understands that learning these lessons as a young man will help him avoid bigger missteps in the future.

LOOKING TOWARD THE FUTURE
Connor has his sights set on a career in construction management, driven by a strong interest in project design and architecture. Last summer, he gained hands-on experience installing drywall with a Delaware-based construction company, and he is now eager to pursue opportunities that align more directly with his goals in management and design. Looking further ahead, Connor is drawn to real estate and hopes to one day flip houses — putting both his technical skills and business instincts to work. With the foundation he’s building at Williamson, he sees a wide range of possibilities ahead.
